e-POWER is Nissan's unique electric-drive hybrid powertrain that integrates an electric motor with a gasoline engine. Since the system is 100% driven by a high-output motor, drivers can enjoy an EV-like experience with the peace of mind of an onboard gasoline engine for generating energy for the battery.

Key points of evolution

The second-generation e-POWER system improves on the first-generation by enhancing powertrain efficiency, increasing power output and better component integration for a more compact packaging. This evolutionary jump also allowed the powertrain to be used with optimal engines to best suit a wide range of vehicles, from compact cars to minivans and SUVs.

Engine power loss was also reduced by adopting an inverter structure that directly cools the power semiconductor and motor with a specially designed rotor surface to optimize the magnetic circuit.

To enhance in-cabin quietness, the system uses estimated road surface roughness and navigation information with new control systems to optimally activate the engine when road noise would mask the engine's sound. The system can also activate the engine for battery generation duty as it nears the destination, making the final stretch of a drive a pleasant, quiet experience. (When using the navigation system.)
Despite using a low displacement 1.2-liter engine in compact cars, the e-POWER system's motor-driven performance generates high torque from start off, and achieves powerful, smooth acceleration above its class.

For minivans, Nissan engineers developed a dedicated e-POWER engine capable of delivering powerful and smooth driving. The dedicated e-POWER engine was developed to handle the heavier body with an optimized form factor that also supports rigidity itself.

A primary balancer shaft and flexible flywheel helps to suppress engine vibrations. This also offers excellent quietness even when the engine operates at a high RPM to generate large amounts of power, such as when passing another vehicle.

For SUVs, Nissan's turbo-charged variable compression ratio engine (VC-Turbo) is paired with the e-POWER system to deliver the high level of driving performance expected from the segment. By lowering the compression ratio and increasing boost pressure when needed, such as at full throttle, the 1.5-liter engine and turbocharger deliver high torque on par with a large displacement engine. This design delivers high-power generation at a low RPM and a quiet and comfortable driving experience.
