Nissan accelerating electrification through Formula E racing
Formula E, the world's sole all-electric single-seater FIA World Championship, provides an elite motorsports platform for leading automotive manufacturers to accelerate EV innovation and brings dramatic racing to the heart of some of the world's most iconic cities.
Nissan has a long and successful history in both motorsports and electric mobility. Determined to showcase its cutting-edge, zero-emissions EV technology before a global audience, Nissan made its all-electric racing debut in Season 5 (2018/19) of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. It's the first and only Japanese manufacturer to enter the series.
Mastering the art of energy management
Nissan tapped its many decades of EV expertise to create its all-electric race car. Knowledge gained from the 16 billion kilometers driven by LEAF customers played a key role in the design of our racing software.
In turn, the lessons learned on the racetrack are helping shape our next generations of EVs.
For example, one of the secrets to success in Formula E is efficient energy management. The development of ultra-efficient battery management software for our electric race cars has led to better intelligent power solutions for our road-going EVs.
Nissan Formula E Team caps Season 10 with a victory
Nissan Formula E Team put on an electrifying performance in Season 10, which kicked off January in Mexico City and ended in July in London with the team’s second victory of the season. That result placed the team fourth in Season 10’s Teams’ Championship, while Oliver Rowland finished fourth in the Drivers' Championship and Sacha Fenestraz 17th.
Rowland had previously driven for the team in Seasons 5-7 and joined Nissan again in Season 10. His win at the London E-Prix was his twelfth podium finish for Nissan in Formula E and his second victory in 2024 following his 2020 triumph in Berlin.
Fenestraz debuted in Season 9 in 2022 and managed to claim pole position with the fastest Formula E lap of all time in just his fifth race. While Season 10 didn’t go as well as he wished, it provided him with invaluable experience.
Nissan will continue to aim for success next season when the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship once again showcases just how thrilling EVs can be.
