Intelligent Back-up Intervention
Assists the driver in avoiding collisions with approaching vehicles and obstacles when reversing
This system alerts the driver with a visual and audible warning when there is the risk of collision with an object behind the vehicle or with a vehicle approaching from the side. If the driver attempts to reverse further under those conditions, then in addition to the initial visual and audible warning, the system automatically activates the brakes for a moment to help the driver prevent a collision.
System operation
If the driver attempts to reverse when a vehicle is approaching from the side or an obstacle is detected behind the vehicle, the system initially activates a visual and audible alert. If the driver does not apply the brakes, the system automatically activates the brakes temporarily to help the driver avoid a collision with the approaching vehicle or obstacle.
- When the shift lever is in the R position and the sonar sensors or radar sensors detect in the vehicle's direction of travel an obstacle or a vehicle approaching from the side; the system alerts the driver as follows:
- When an obstacle is detected: A display is shown and audible warning played.
- When an approaching vehicle is detected: An audible warning is played, and the door mirror indicator lamp on the side of the approaching vehicle flashes. At the same time, a yellow rectangular frame appears on the center display unit.
- If the driver attempts to reverse when a vehicle is approaching from the side or an obstacle is detected behind the vehicle, the system activates the follows in order to help the driver avoid a collision:
- An audible warning is played (3 times), and a red rectangular frame appears on the center display unit.
- At the same time, the system automatically applies the brakes (for a moment).
- If the driver is depressing the accelerator pedal when the system activates, the accelerator pedal is pressed back upwards, and the driver is warned to switch to the brake pedal. At the same time, the system activates the brakes to help the driver avoid a collision.
- This function operates when the vehicle speed is approximately 8 km/h or less.
System mechanism
Radar sensors installed on both sides near the rear bumper (① in the figure) detect vehicles crossing from the side. Sonar sensors installed along the rear of the vehicle (② in the figure) detect obstacles in the rearward direction.
If the driver attempts to reverse when an obstacle, or a vehicle approaching from the side is detected in the vehicle’s travel direction, the system uses brake actuator to slow down the vehicle.
If the driver is depressing the accelerator pedal, the accelerator pedal actuator presses the pedal back upwards to assist the driver with releasing the accelerator pedal.
