In line with its commitment to zero-emission leadership and to promote the use of electric vehicles, Nissan launched the LEAF Model ZE0 — the world's first mass-produced EV — in 2010. The following year, Nissan unveiled LEAF to Home, a system to supply electricity from the LEAF's battery to residential houses.
It showcased how EVs could serve as a drivable energy source. In 2017, the fully remodeled LEAF evolved into the ZE1 model. Global sales of the LEAF have now surpassed 600,000 units.
In 2016, Nissan debuted the Note e-POWER Model E12. The e-POWER system uses a highly efficient gasoline engine to charge the batteries of the electric motor that drives the vehicle. This delivers the excitement, quietness and smooth acceleration that only an electric powertrain can offer, but with the convenience that comes with a fuel tank. The Note e-POWER was a huge hit, becoming Japan's best-selling car in 2018.
Nissan in 2016 introduced ProPILOT — an autonomous drive technology for single-lane expressways — as an option in the new Serena. The move was part of the company’s Zero Fatalities initiative, which aims to reduce the number of fatalities in accidents involving Nissans to virtually zero.
