2000s

Nissan GT-R R35
Since
the
1990s,
Nissan
has
focused
its
attention
on
environmental
and
safety
automotive
technologies.
In
2000,
the
Sentra
CA
—
a
super
ultra-low
emission
vehicle
(SULEV)
whose
exhaust
was
said
to
be
cleaner
than
city
air
—
was
launched
in
the
California
market.
In
Japan,
the
2003
Nissan
Bluebird
Sylphy
became
the
first
domestic
vehicle
to
be
certified
as
emitting
75%
less
pollution
than
the
2005
emission
standards.
Nissan
also
debuted
the
Hypermini
Model
EA0
—
an
innovative,
compact
EV
featuring
a
lightweight
aluminum
body
—
in
2000
and
conducted
large-scale
verification
tests
in
two
cities.
The
acquisition
of
valuable
data
such
as
drivers'
usage
patterns
and
usability
created
a
foundation
for
subsequent
EV
development.
Representative
models
of
this
period
include
the
X-TRAIL
(2000),
a
full-size
SUV
that
became
a
huge
hit
globally;
the
Fairlady
Z
(2002),
which
made
a
comeback
after
a
short
hiatus;
the
Murano
(2002),
an
innovative
crossover
SUV;
the
new-generation
compact
Tiida
(2004)
and
Note
N
(2005)
—
which
became
global
hits,
including
in
Japan
—
and
the
Nissan
GT-R
(2007),
which
spun
off
from
the
Skyline
and
evolved
into
a
super
sports
car.
