Range. Charging. Batteries. Energy sharing. Making the switch to an electric vehicle might come with some new terminology – but understanding how EVs work and fit seamlessly into everyday life doesn't have to be complicated. This World EV Day, Nissan's new five-part video series, 'EV? Easy!', is breaking down some of the biggest questions around electric driving.
Thinking about going electric? Or curious to learn more about how your current EV actually works?
You might be wondering how far an EV can really go on a single charge. How the battery powering it works. Where you can charge, and how quickly. What happens when you plug it in. Or even how your electric car can act as a mobile battery (and make you money while it's at it) through energy sharing.
They're all reasonable questions. And while there's some very clever technology working in the vehicle, living with an EV couldn't be simpler or more beneficial.
As Nissan continues to expand its EV offering, including the upcoming Nissan Pixo, set to be unveiled in Europe on 23 September, EV? Easy! helps answer the questions many customers have about making the switch to electric.
No engineering degree required, and no confusing jargon:
Episode 1: Going electric - What's it like driving an EV?1:47
Across five short episodes, the series answers the questions that matter most to drivers.
What does an EV experience feel like?
An electric vehicle still gets you from A to B. It just does it differently.
Instead of a traditional engine with lots of moving parts, energy stored in an EV battery powers an electric motor, which drives the wheels. Fewer moving parts also mean less energy is lost along the way.
For the driver, the experience is simple: immediate acceleration and a smooth, quiet drive.
How does an EV battery keep you moving?
An EV battery might look like one large unit, but inside there's a lot more going on.
Many individual battery cells are grouped into modules and built into a complete battery pack, working together to store and deliver the energy needed to drive. Behind the scenes, the vehicle also manages things like battery temperature and charging, helping keep everything working as it should.
Episode 2: Battery systems - How does an EV battery work?2:01
How far can an EV take you?
Modern EVs are designed to make efficient use of the energy stored in their battery, helping you get more from every charge.
How far you travel can be influenced by speed, temperature, road conditions and driving style. Simple choices can make a difference too. From maintaining a steady speed to making use of regenerative braking to recover energy as the vehicle slows.
Episode 3: Range & Efficiency - How far can an EV really go?1:18
How can EV charging fit around your day?
One of the benefits of EV charging is that it can happen while you're doing something else – overnight at home, while you're working or shopping, or during a break on a longer journey.
Charging speed can vary too. It's usually fastest when the battery is at a lower level and gradually slows as it fills. That's why many drivers top up from around 20% to 80% on longer journeys.
Episode 4: Charging Systems - How does EV charging work?1:39
What if your EV could give energy back?
An EV battery doesn't necessarily have to use all its stored energy for driving. Some EVs can share that energy too.
Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) can power everyday devices directly from a compatible EV battery. With the right equipment, Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) can share stored energy with the home. And looking ahead, where available, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) could allow compatible EVs to share energy with the wider electricity grid – potentially allowing owners to benefit financially by taking part.
Episode 5: Energy Sharing - Can an EV power your life?1:50
Five episodes. A lot less EV confusion.
There's some sophisticated technology working behind every electric vehicle. But understanding the things that matter – and make your life easier – doesn't need to be complicated.
