Leading a gender-diverse team of engineering talent
Panthipa Thongkaow — Engineering Lead, Thailand
What does it take to deliver truly great design? Car design is often described as the bridge between science and art. That’s exactly how Exterior Trim Engineer Panthipa Thongkaow applies herself to her work, leading a team of young design engineers in our Research and Development division in Nissan Thailand.
Panthipa - known as Bew – heads up the team responsible for exterior parts and accessories. From bumpers to the front grille, exterior details lend character and style, shaping a design personality that can turn heads in a busy traffic jam.
It’s a job that requires a deeply technical mindset, but an appreciation of form and beauty, too. Bew looks to the world around her for inspiration, exploring how the latest automotive trends influence the cars we drive.
To help create showstopping exteriors, Bew has another secret weapon. Her passionate young team, made up of different genders, nationalities, cultures and backgrounds. Bew is firmly convinced that this diversity is their superpower.
“Everyone brings unique perspectives or approaches work from a new or unexpected angle. By listening, asking questions, and connecting as individuals, I find that we can deliver more creative exteriors that suit all kinds of drivers. Around the world, our customers are as diverse as we are.”
One of the creative projects Bew and her team are most proud of? Developing the concept for the Nissan Navara Black Edition. Witnessing their ideas come to life on the road was a proud moment for every team member.
Where does Bew see the industry headed next? She’s convinced that even greater diversity will lead to a highly skilled workforce, with more and more female engineers taking the wheel.
To achieve true gender parity, Bew believes there’s still a way to go. By cultivating a team valued for their talent regardless of gender, Bew is helping to influence the future of the industry – and a more inclusive workplace.
