An ideal posture inspired by weightlessness makes the cabin even more comfortable

Even when sitting normally, the body's muscles work continuously to maintain its posture, and that accumulated strain leads to fatigue and discomfort. These seats combine a power articulating seatback (a powered mid-back joint) with a powered ottoman to create an ideal posture that places minimal load on the body. The design helps reduce fatigue during long journeys, enhancing comfort for all occupants.

System operation

The "neutral posture", measured by NASA research, is the relaxed position which the human body naturally adopts in zero gravity. It places minimal strain on the body and is regarded as the ideal state for remaining comfortable over long periods.

The Zero Gravity Seats recreate this neutral posture using the articulating seatback and the ottoman. By minimizing the load on the muscles and spine, they allow occupants to relax on long drives.

System mechanism

Nissan designed the pivot points of the articulating seatback and the ottoman around the shape of the human musculoskeletal system, achieving a posture that minimizes the load on the spine and muscles. The articulating seatback contours to the upper body from the lower back upward, while the ottoman supports the legs from the calves to the thighs.

1. When reclining

In addition to reclining the seatback, the articulating mechanism raises the chest to bring the body closer to a neutral posture, minimizing load on the upper body. The ottoman holds the knees at an optimal angle, reducing strain on the legs.

2. When seated normally

Even without engaging the articulating mechanism, the seat's default shape incorporates a moderate articulated structure that naturally supports the body from the lower back upward. This helps occupants maintain a comfortable posture that reduces fatigue.
Because both the articulating seatback and the ottoman are power-operated, occupants can easily adjust them to suit their body shape and preferences.
