What is your role as a main designer of INFINITI’s exterior design?

I was chosen to be the main exterior designer for INFINITI project after they selected my design proposal portraying the brand’s “Poison” image in a positive light. I joined Nissan because I was a fan of INFINITI, a luxury brand known for its bold and unique designs. I find my job very rewarding because they let me infuse my personal preferences into the design. I am very excited to be able to design my dream car brand in a way that reflects my own vision. It’s satisfying to know that my design will become a part of the brand’s history once it’s released to the public.
Nissan offers many opportunities, which is a great advantage. I get to participate in various competitions, and even after I became the main designer, my highly skilled colleagues and I can improve design together while sharing idea, which inspires and improves my skills at the same time.

You have a background in engineering, not art, correct?

Correct, I don’t have an art degree, so I feel like I have a slight disadvantage in drawing skills. I know I need to learn more to compensate for my weakness, and I’m hoping to leverage my strength with a background in engineering to explore a diverse array of ideas beyond just cars. In addition to cars, I’m also interested in airplanes and F1 racing. To better understand these topics, I delve deeper into the underlying principles of physics through physical phenomena. I also try to see things from a broader perspective instead of the design alone. This allowed me to develop diverse and original ideas.
My individual ideas are essential to INFINITI designs, which require uniqueness. I often draw inspiration from airplanes, and I think this inspiration meshes well with INFINITI, a brand that values high performance.

VISION

Ever since I joined Nissan, I’ve spent most of my time working with INFINITI. Meanwhile, the advancing digital tools have steadily changed the way we create ideas. However, this change could also be an opportunity to generate new ideas. Rather than generating similar ideas, I’d like to refine my identity as a designer and contribute to the brand’s evolution.
