Born in 1965 in Hyogo, lives and works in London.
Tomoko Yoneda is a photographer who not only addresses subjects visible in reality but also projects the memories and history associated with places and things onto her work, with the role of photography “to record the times” as her basis for making art.
Her recent major exhibitions include “We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness” (Himeji City Museum of Art / Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, 2013-2014), “The 10th Gwangju Biennale” (2014), “Aichi Triennale 2013” (Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, 2013), "The First Kyiv International Biennale of Contemporary Art" (Mystetskyi Arsenal, 2012), “An End is a Beginning” (Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, 2008), “La Biennale di Venezia, The 52nd International Art Exhibition of Venice” (2007) and “A Decade After” (Ashiya City Museum of Art and History, 2005). She received the Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists awarded by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2014.
Yoneda’s upcoming exhibitions include “Discordant Harmony” (Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art) from December, as well as at Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts (Taiwan) and “REAL DMZ” at Art Sonje Center (South Korea) in 2016.

Artist's comment
It is a great honor to be selected as a finalist for the Nissan Art Award.
I will continue making art with an eye to our potential to cut away at what lies behind “image” and question what is then revealed.
I am also sincerely grateful for this marvelous chance to take the first step toward a new challenge, and for the support for my efforts in tackling that challenge.
