Born in 1975 in Hiroshima, lives and works in Hiroshima.
Takahiro Iwasaki is a contemporary artist who takes everyday scenery such as steel electric towers and building site as well as historical Japanese architectures of Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima or the Temple of the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto, and reconstructs them to form complex miniature constructions as sculpture. He received a PhD from Hiroshima City University in 2003 and an MFA from the Edinburgh College of Art in 2005. His recent major exhibitions include “Takahiro Iwasaki: In Focus” (Aron Gallery, Asia Society, New York, 2015), “Takahiro Iwasaki: Itsukushima Reflection Model From the NGV Collection”(National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 2014), "The 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT7)" (Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane, 2012), "Yokohama Triennale 2011" (Yokohama Museum of Art, 2011) and "10th Biennale de Lyon ‘The Spectacle of the Everyday’"(Museum of Contemporary Art, Lyon and the other areas, 2009).
Iwasaki has also created the current window display for the newly reopened Hermès store at Seibu Ikebukuro Department Store, and plans to exhibit at the Kawasaki City Museum permanent collection show from January 2016.

Artist's comment

I recently turned 40. My last exhibition in my 30s was my first here at home in Japan, a solo show at the Kurobe Art Museum, and the first of my 40s will be starting next month at the Kurumaya Museum of Art in Oyama. I'm delighted to now be selected for the first time as a finalist for this major award.
