Born in 1971 in Hyogo, lives and works in Kanagawa.
Sayaka Akiyama creates her artworks based on her experience of living in different places and her actions of walking, from which she explores “the footpath of time” by sewing threads onto maps, tracing the routes that she actually takes, or making installation work consisting of materials collected from the field. This unique method of expression shows a strong and deep relationship between herself and many places.
She completed Master Course of Fine Art at Joshibi University of Art and Design in 2001.
Her recent major exhibitions include “MOZU-NO-HAYANIE” (Solo Exhibition, Joshibi Art Gallery, M-50, Shanghai, China, 2014), “Waiting for the First Train” (Tokyo Station Gallery, Tokyo, 2012) and “Berlin-Tokyo/Tokyo-Berlin” (New National Gallery, Berlin, Germany, 2006). Selected Public Collections include Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Kirishima Open-air Art Museum and The Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art. She received Philip Morris Art Award (2000) and the 21st annual Takashimaya art award (2010).
Her upcoming exhibitions include the Saitama Triennale 2016, which opens in September 2016.
