Initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions
[The scope of Nissan activities]
In our efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, Nissan is actively involved in collaborative partnerships. We have joined with industry, government, academia and other sectors in a range of environment and conservation initiatives to achieve optimal results in CO2 reduction.
Adopting multiple approaches to reduce CO2 emissions
Nissan is promoting activities to reduce CO2 emissions beyond our regular business framework. We are engaged in four major areas as shown below.

[Four specific approaches outside the business framework]
1 Energy conversion Depending on the location of the plant and in cooperation with local government; we adopt natural energy such as solar power and wind generation.
2 Boosting energy consumption efficiency Promote eco-driving activities, including lectures to educate customers on driving habits that can improve fuel consumption efficiency.
3 Reducing traffic congestion - Improving traffic flow such as the Kanagawa Prefecture SKY project- Migrate from trucks to ship or railway as a means of transport. Promote wider use of transportation with lower CO2 emissions.
4 CO2 compensation activities - Consider reforestation activities- Consider CO2 reduction activities such as emissions trading and other economic measures to support developing nations
About the current Kanagawa Prefecture SKY project
The Kanagawa Prefecture SKY project, launched in October 2006, aims to help reduce the number of traffic accidents and improve the flow of traffic. In addition to easing traffic congestion and contributing towards a safer driving environment, the project aims to optimize energy consumption and reduce CO2 emissions. The SKY project is a cooperative partnership involving automotive and other organizations along with various government agencies and ministries.
Nissan will validate the outcome of the SKY project with the potential of adapting it for other regions in Japan and around the world.

Data from vehicles participating in the SKY project is collected and analyzed to produce a detailed image of traffic patterns. With this traffic data, the driver can reach a destination via the fastest route and avoid traffic congestions.

* Utilizing wireless communications technology to obtain data on vehicle position, speed and other factors
