Jury Comment for the Finalist in June, 2017

Ryuichi Ishikawa
Ryuichi Ishikawa

Born in 1984 in Okinawa, where he continues to live, Ryuichi Ishikawa graduated from Okinawa International University. His photography captures portraits of the people, streets and landscapes of his native Okinawa. The energy and appearance emanating from the subjects he frames in his viewfinder vividly reveal the multi-faceted nature of Japan today. In 2015, he won both the Kimura Ihei Award and Photographic Society of Japan Newcomer’s Award. Recent major exhibitions include “okinawan portraits 2012–2016” (Epson Imaging Gallery epSITE, Tokyo, 2016), “BODY/PLAY/POLITICS” (Yokohama Museum of Art, 2016), “Roppongi Crossing 2016: My Body, Your Voice” (Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, 2016), “Once thinking, nothing before eyes” (Yokohama Civic Art Gallery Azamino, 2016), and “+zkop” (OCAC, Okinawa, 2015). Major photo-books include A Grand Polyphony, okinawan portraits 2010–2012, and okinawan portraits 2012–2016 (all published by Akaaka Art Publishing).

Artist's comment

I have continued with my photography thanks to the support of many people. I am grateful that this has now led to my selection as a finalist for the Nissan Art Award and the chance to exhibit my work. As I move forward I will value and harness this opportunity. Photography creates many encounters and opportunities, expanding my world as well as making me realize things about myself. In order to experience and change as well as enjoy this, I want to confront what I see as honestly as possible.
