Nissan entered a pair of R391 machines in the 1999 24 Hours of Le Mans race, but car No. 22 crashed in the previous day's qualifier, and car No. 23 retired after seven hours. However, in November that year, car No. 23 (M. Krumm, E. Comas, S. Motoyama) vindicated the R391, wining a brilliant victory in the Le Mans-Fuji 1000km race held in Japan.
