Rear-wheel drive cars transitioned to front-wheel drive (FWD) cars in the first half of 1980s for higher space efficiency and most of them adopted FWD with "transverse engine layout". The Nissan's first FWD car was "Cherry" in 1970.
The fifth generation Sunny B11 in 1981 was the third product line of FWD car after "Pulsar" and "Violet Liberta". Mounted engine was mainly E (1300cc and 1500cc, 4 cylinders) developed for FWD. Lineup was sedan, 3-door, and 5-door wagon (named "California"). This car is 1500cc sedan, the best-selling model at the time.
This generation was the first model that was sold in US market as NISSAN Sentra. Annual output of B11 in 1983 was the largest among world top-selling models like VW Golf and Toyota Corolla.
