Shiro Nakamura Writes the Book on Nissan Design

Yokohama –May 26- (NMC) For Nissan's design chief, there are reflective moments as well as inspiring ones.

Chief Creative Officer Shiro Nakamura, the man behind a fleet of GT-Rs, Zs, Cubes, Infinitis and Nissan Leaf vehicles, has put his thoughts and experiences into a new book called "Stories on Shapes of Japanese Cars".

The jazz and classical musician with the nickname of "Fingers" says design needs to reflect individual genius as well as brand harmony, and the book depicts over a decade at Nissan orchestrating.
"I would like to show what I'm thinking, what our design people are thinking, I think I want to make people more interested in car design." he says.

Nakamura joined Nissan in 1999, coming over from truckmaker Isuzu and bringing a passion for cutting-edge car design incorporating diverse images such as bumblebees, shoes and even video games.

Aerodynamics, sportiness and a modern -- occasionally futuristic -- touch have also been staples for the award-winning designer, but Nakamura says a pragmatic view about the potential consumer is key.

"It used to be Japanese, American markets and European markets -- very simple, the major markets. Now, you a Chinese market and Asian (markets), Russian, the Middle East and Brazil, and much more complex. That is in this 10 years the biggest difference -- the diversity of the market." he says.

His book is currently only available in Japanese, but like many of his cars it may soon find global traction.

Nakamura, now working on next generation EVs as well as adding to a design stable of over 100 cars, says young designers need one key characteristic in an increaasingly complex business.

"I think design is becoming much more complex, not as simple as just making a nice-looking car, so I really want the young people to open your eyes and try to be, or should be, much more interested -- with more curiosity. You must have curiousity for everything. Curiousity is the power of creation." he says.
