Following its debut at the 27th Tokyo Motor Show in 1987, the FY31 (first-generation Cima) was officially launched in January 1988 as Japan's first car to sport a V6 twin-cam turbo engine. Without the constraints of a compact car frame, its generous styling and comfortable interior made it stand apart. The top-of-the-line Type II Limited model was also equipped with an electronically controlled air suspension.
