The first generation "Patrol" was rolled out in 1951. In Japan, it became "Safari" when the third generation 160 was rolled out in 1980. In overseas countries, it continues to be Patrol, a time-proven brand with the robust frame and reliable rigid suspension with leaf springs. 160 had user-friendly equipment and interior to enhance passengers' comfort to satisfy the demand for 4WD cars for recreation.
Safari in Japan started with SD33 engine (3300cc, 95ps, diesel) and evolved into 161 in 1983 that featured SD33T engine (120ps, diesel with turbo) and 5-speed manual transmission. High roof van type model was also added to lineup. This is the car of "AD" (adventure) grade in 1985.
