SUPPLEMENTAL NISSAN NEWS From: Corporate Communications Dept.
Nissan to Open "Carest Zama" as Japan's First Large-Scale Auto Mall at Zama Operations Center Next December Tokyo ‐ Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced that it will open Japan's first large-scale auto mall, to be called "Carest Zama," on the premises of the Zama Operations Center in December 1999. This new type of outlet will concentrate at one location all the activities pertaining to customers' total vehicle needs, including sales of new cars, used cars, parts and supplies as well as service operations. A test-drive course, trade-in vehicle purchase center, auction arena, cafeteria and other facilities will also be constructed as part of the auto mall. Business operations are scheduled to begin on December 3, 1999. In preparation for the opening of Carest Zama, Nissan established Nissan Carest Zama Co., Ltd. on December 2 as a new company that will manage sales activities for new cars, parts and supplies and service operations at this large-scale auto mall. Nissan Managing Director Shigeru Matsumoto assumed the position of president of the new company. Nissan dealers in Kanagawa Prefecture and Tokyo and Nissan Used Car Center Co., Ltd. (NUC) will also participate in used car sales activities at the new auto mall. Carest Zama will always have on display over 100 units of Nissan’s entire lineup of new vehicle models. In addition, customers will be able to test-drive all of the models on a special course that will be built as part of the mall facilities. A wide assortment of used cars numbering approximately 1,000 units will also be displayed regardless of the manufacturer, enabling customers to choose from a broad selection of vehicle types. Including NUC’s auto auction arena, Carest Zama will cover a total area about nine times the size of the Tokyo Dome baseball field, making it Japan’s first large-scale integrated outlet capable of catering to customers' complete vehicle needs. Carest Zama will have the following major features. Nissan has embarked on a reform of its domestic sales activities as one of the specific measures for accomplishing the Global Business Reform Plan. Preparations are under way to change the present domestic sales structure to a two-channel sales system starting from April 1999, with the aim of improving customer convenience and benefits and increasing sales efficiency per vehicle model. Because Carest Zama will integrate all of the operations associated with vehicle ownership, including sales of new cars, used cars, parts and supplies and service, it will be able to meet wide-ranging customer needs. Nissan expects this will significantly improve customer-drawing power and thereby contribute to greater sales efficiency. Moreover, based on the results of Carest Zama, Nissan is also looking at the possibility of establishing similar large-scale auto malls at several dozen locations throughout Japan in the future. Nissan is planning to vigorously implement many different sales methods as part of its ongoing efforts aimed at reforming domestic sales activities. The name Carest has been coined by adding the superlative suffix “est” to the word “car.” It also expresses the idea of being a place of “rest” for “car” owners.
