Nissan Releases All-New Prairie Liberty
-- A Compact Minivan for Creative Lifestyles --

Tokyo ] Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced the domestic release of the Prairie Liberty, an all-new minivan developed around the concept of "a vehicle fitting creative lifestyles."

Prairie Liberty L-A Pack (2WD)
Ever since its debut in 1982, the Prairie has been instrumental in developing Japanfs utility vehicle market as a compact minivan combining superb occupant comfort and convenience with impressive levels of essential vehicle performance. In conjunction with this generational change, Nissan aimed to create a minivan featuring a compact body for exceptional driving ease and user convenience together with an eminently comfortable interior. This latest generation of the Prairie, which has been newly christened "Liberty," has been designed and engineered around the concept of "a vehicle fitting creative lifestyles and tailored to a variety of daily life situations."

Taking full advantage of its compact body dimensions, the Liberty turns in a minimum radius of 5.3 meters (2WD models) for outstanding maneuverability on a par with that of midsize sedans. Moreover, with sliding doors on both sides and a flat floor without any sill level differences, it offers excellent ease of ingress/egress, enabling anyone to enter and exit effortlessly.

The Liberty also pursues superior functionality and practicality. Its spacious interior offers lateral and longitudinal walk-through as a result of adopting a column shift, versatile seating configurations and a wealth of storage spaces, among other thoughtful features. Additionally, the third-row seat cushion flips forward at the touch of a lever, allowing the volume of the luggage area to be changed flexibly as needed, and the back door incorporates a glass hatch for easy loading and unloading of cargo even in tight places. A ventilation fan is also available to maintain an immaculate, comfortable interior by evacuating odors and stale air outside .

In the area of environmental friendliness, the Liberty comes with the HYPER CVT continuously variable transmission that improves fuel economy by approximately 20% over the previous model. Further, all 2WD models are available with a low-emission vehicle (LEV) specification that reduces emission levels to approximately one-tenth of the average values currently required under Japan's exhaust emission standards.

Safety performance has also been aggressively pursued. In addition to its high-strength Zone Body construction for excellent crashworthiness, the Liberty adopts the Front-Seat Active Head Restraint, which moves the head rest forward and upward in the event of a rear-end collision to help prevent excessive rearward movement of an occupantfs head, thereby helping reduce the impact on the neck. Other safety equipment includes the ABS + Braking Assist + Electronic Braking Force Distribution (EBD) package, which provides more reassuring braking control, dual airbag supplemental restraint systems (SRS) for the driver and front passenger and a side airbag SRS with head protection capability for both front occupants. These and numerous other safety features combine to deliver high-level occupant protection.

The name Liberty was chosen to signify a vehicle that enables family members and friends to enjoy traveling freely as they wish.

Overview of New Prairie Liberty
1. Compact body for exceptional driving ease and user convenience
Thanks to its compact body, the Liberty boasts a minimum turning radius of 5.3 meters (2WD models), achieving highly agile maneuverability that ranks at the top of its class.

A height of 325 mm from the floor to the hip point (heel level difference), seat travel of 228 mm and a steering wheel inclination of 30 degrees create a driving position that will feel completely natural even to former sedan owners.

Special care has been taken to make the Liberty easy for everyone to enter and exit. The opening of the sliding doors has been increased to 650 mm in width, 50 mm wider than on the previous model. Additionally, the flat floor has no sill level differences and large, easy-to-grasp support grips are also provided to ensure effortless ingress and egress.

The Liberty also comes with an extensive roster of convenience features designed to support driving operations. The multifunctional gfine visionh digital instrumentation affords excellent legibility and incorporates an enlarged fuel gauge display along with an oil change indication display. A rear-view monitor, capable of displaying the vehicle width and distances, enables the driver to easily perceive how close any nearby objects are when putting the vehicle in the garage or parking. Moreover, corner and rear sensors assist the driver in judging the vehiclefs position.

2. Comfortable cabin and flexible luggage area for greater relaxation and enjoyment
The adoption of a column shift allows both lateral and longitudinal walk-through for extra convenience.

Versatile seating configurations can be easily arranged to match a wide variety of uses and needs, including the number of passengers or types of cargo to be carried.

The third-row seat cushion flips forward at the touch of a lever to transform the luggage area into three flexible modes]seven-passenger seating plus 133 liters of luggage space, five-passenger seating with the second-row seats slid back for greater legroom plus 365 liters of luggage space and five-passenger seating plus 474 liters of luggage space.

A glass hatch has been adopted in the back door for easy loading and unloading of cargo even when the vehicle is parked in a tight spot with little room at the rear.

Another comfort feature is a ventilation fan that evacuates odors and stale air outside to maintain a clean, comfortable interior ambience.

3. Smooth acceleration and supple ride comfort
Powering the Liberty is the SR20DE engine that delivers an exhilarating acceleration feel and ample torque in the practical engine speed range to provide comfortable driving performance of superior quality.

All 2WD models are fitted with the HYPER CVT, the first minivan implementation of this continuously variable transmission that provides remarkably smooth acceleration without any shift shock. The HYPER CVT incorporates the E-Flow Torque Converter with a lockup clutch that enables powerful starting acceleration and low fuel consumption in addition to excellent drivability even when traveling at a very slow speed, such as when starting off on an uphill incline or putting the vehicle in the garage.

The Liberty adopts a multi-link rear suspension for enhanced handling and stability combined with supple ride comfort.

4. Enhanced environmental friendliness
The HYPER CVT continuously variable transmission is featured on all 2WD models to improve fuel economy by approximately 20% over the previous model under 10-15 test mode operation.

All 2WD models are available with a low-emission vehicle (LEV) specification that achieves markedly cleaner exhaust by reducing emission levels to around one-tenth of the average regulation values currently specified for operation under Japanfs 10-15 test mode.

Vigorous efforts were also directed toward improving recyclability, enabling the Liberty to attain a recyclable rate of 90% by weight according to Nissanfs own calculation criteria.

Various other measures were actively implemented with the aim of preserving water quality, reducing the use of lead and enhancing overall environmental friendliness.

5. High-level safety
With the aim of further augmenting safety performance, Nissan designs and engineers all of its vehicles on the basis of the Triple Safety concept comprising three fundamental principles of safety. The first is ginformation safetyh for forewarning the driver of potential danger, the second is gcontrol safetyh for assisting the driver in avoiding potentially dangerous situations, and the third is gimpact safetyh for helping reduce injury in the event of an accident. Based on this Triple Safety concept, the Liberty incorporates an extensive roster of safety technologies to provide high-level safety performance.

In conjunction with the release of the Liberty, Autech Japan, Inc., a Nissan affiliate, has customized the Liberty Enchante lifecare vehicle* which will be released nationwide on January 29, 1999.

The Liberty Enchante is specially designed for easy ingress/egress by senior citizens, persons with leg disabilities and others who experience difficulty in entering and exiting vehicles. The front door on the passengerfs side opens wider as a result of expanding the opening angle from 65 to 72 degrees. Additionally, a gslide-out lift seath is provided as the front-passengerfs seat, which can be turned manually 95 degrees toward the outside, slid out and lowered by an electric motor so that the cushion is only 450 mm off the ground. This seat reduces the load put on the body by a personfs posture when entering the vehicle and also the load on an attendantfs lower back.

*Nissan Group companies use the term glifecare vehicleh (LV) to refer to vehicles that are designed to assist persons with special mobility needs in various daily life situations.
