BP Nissan Clinch 1998 Bankfin Touring Car Title At Killarney
The BP Nissan team's Giniel de Villiers on Saturday (October 24) clinched the 1998 Bankfin Touring Car championship at the Western Cape Killarney circuit. De Villiers did so in style, by winning both of the day's races in his BP Nissan Primera, setting a new Killarney Touring Car lap record. His victories gave him his second Bankfin Touring Car title in two years, confirming the Nissan Primera's superiority in the South African Touring Car racing arena. The BP Nissan drivers de Villiers and Duncan Vos stamped their authority on the race meeting during Friday's official qualifying sessions. Duncan Vos took pole position for the opening race, with de Villiers alongside him on the front row. At the start of the race, de Villiers blasted into the lead, followed by Vos, Terry Moss (Engen Audi A4) and Sasol BMW drivers Shaun van der Linde and Michael Briggs. Drama came halfway through the opening lap when the Moss Audi rammed Briggs' BMW going into the 170 km/h Shell Sweep, sending it into Vos' Nissan. All three cars ploughed into the tyre wall at the side of the track and instant retirement. Three laps later Marco dos Santos lost control of his privateer Midas Duckhams Nissan Sentra in the same corner, hitting the tyre wall next to the stranded wrecks. He also retired on the spot. That left de Villiers to win easily, clinching the 1998 Bankfin Touring Car championship and setting a new lap record for good measure. The new champion celebrated by also winning the second race from flag to flag. Team mate Vos had a race to forget. His repaired Nissan handled badly, causing him to spin twice during the course of the 15 laps. He had to be content with a ninth place.
