Nissan Releases All-New Sunny

Tokyo ‐ Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced the domestic release of the all-new Sunny following the implementation of a full model change.

Sunny 1500 Super Saloon (2WD)

Ever since the first-generation model was introduced in 1966, the Sunny has been highly acclaimed by customers not only in Japan but also throughout the world as a representative compact sedan of Japanese origin. Over the years the Sunny has established a solid position as the global standard of its class.

As the ninth generation of this popular series, the new Sunny has been developed around the concept of "the sedan that sets a new global standard." While inheriting the Sunny's traditional identity, the new-generation model has been meticulously designed and engineered to respond fully to society's demands and expectations. This has been accomplished by developing a completely new platform in active pursuit of higher levels of safety and environmental protection. By Nissan’s definition, a platform is a combination of a floor panel and functional components such as the engine, transmission, chassis and other functional parts attached to the floor panel, which determines the basic performance of a vehicle.

The exterior design conveys an impression of enhanced quality and a distinct sense of presence while continuing the Sunny's traditional styling that has been a familiar hallmark of the car. On the inside, the interior adopts equipment features intended to facilitate easy use by a wide spectrum of customers, based on the concept of a universal design that ensures maximum ease of use by people everywhere.

In the area of driving performance, the new platform provides enhanced ride comfort, superb handling and stability and remarkable quietness. Among the engine choices offered is the newly developed NEO QG15DE powerplant that improves fuel economy, delivers greater torque at low to intermediate speeds and operates more quietly, achieving an exceptionally high balance of practicality, economy and quietness. Another engine choice is the NEO Di QG18DD in-line 4-cylinder direct-injection gasoline engine that delivers both substantially improved fuel economy and higher power output. This engine is paired with Nissan's HYPER CVT continuously variable transmission, which significantly reduces fuel consumption and provides smooth, powerful acceleration, to achieve markedly improved fuel economy and the powerful driving performance of a vehicle one class larger.

Safety performance has also been thoroughly addressed. The adoption of the new platform as part of the high-strength Zone Body construction attains high-level crashworthiness that substantially improves occupant protection from collisions in all directions. A new safety technology featured on the Sunny is the Front-Seat Active Head Restraint, which moves the headrest upward and forward in the event of a rear-end collision to help prevent excessive rearward movement of an occupant's head, thereby helping reduce the impact on the neck. Another newly adopted safety feature is the Occupant-Friendly Upper Interior that reduces the impact of interior trim parts on an occupant’s head in a collision. Additionally, standard safety equipment on all models includes the "ABS + Braking Assist + Electronic Braking Force Distribution (EBD) (2WD)" package, which improves braking control for greater peace of mind, and dual airbag supplemental restraint systems (SRS) for the driver and front passenger. A side airbag SRS with head protection capability is also available as an option for both front occupants. This extensive roster of equipment further augments the car's high-level safety performance in all directions.

As an indication of the Sunny's enhanced environmental friendliness, the NEO QG15DE lean-burn engine improves fuel economy by approximately 20%, achieving a figure 16.8 km/l under Japan's 10-15 test mode, and cuts carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by approximately 17%. These data are in comparison with the previous Sedan model fitted with a 1.5-liter engine and an automatic transmission. The combination of the NEO Di QG18DD direct-injection gasoline engine and the HYPER CVT provides class-leading fuel economy of 17.6 km/l for 1.8-liter cars (excluding those with a manual transmission). This remarkable combination improves fuel economy by approximately 60% and reduces CO2 emissions by some 40% compared with the previous Sedan model equipped with a 1.8-liter engine and an automatic transmission. Moreover, the NEO QG15DE engine is also available on low-emission vehicle (LEV) models that achieve markedly cleaner exhaust by reducing emission levels under 10-15 test mode operation to around one-tenth of the average values currently required by Japan's exhaust emission standards.

Overview of New Sunny
1. Adoption of a new platform
An entirely new platform, which determines a car's fundamental capabilities, has been developed for the Sunny with the aim of meeting safety and environmental performance requirements anticipated for vehicles in the 21st century.

This new platform achieves high-level crashworthiness in all directions along with enhanced levels of handling, stability, ride comfort and quietness that exceed the norms of the compact sedan class.

2. Beautiful, stellar-quality design
At the front, the wide, three-dimensional appearance of the mask conveys an image of superlative quality and makes a distinct styling statement.

The side view is distinguished by a sharp, clean-cut look created by the character line flowing from the front to the rear.

At the rear, the wide combination lamps accentuate the car's unique sense of presence and its premium-quality character.

On the inside, the large center cluster extending continuously from the top of the instrument panel to the center console creates a high-quality interior design with a three-dimensional look.

Based on the concept of a universal design that ensures maximum ease of use by people at large, user convenience has been substantially improved. This has been done, for example, by adopting an easy-to-read style of lettering for the instruments and by making the lettering and control switches larger in size.

3. Highly comfortable and enjoyable driving performance
The Sunny offers a wide choice of six distinctive engines in pursuit of highly comfortable and enjoyable driving performance.

New NEO QG15DE engine
This engine has been developed as the successor to the GA15DE engine renowned for its superb balance of all-around performance. Thanks to a thoroughgoing reduction of friction, the NEO QG15DE engine delivers greater torque and operates more quietly at low to intermediate speeds along with providing improved fuel economy. As a result, this newly developed engine achieves an outstanding balance of practicality, economy and quietness.

New NEO QG15DE engine with lean-burn specification
Based on the NEO QG15DE engine, this lean-burn engines combines precise air/fuel ratio control using a 32-bit CPU with a swirl control valve that strengthens the in-cylinder gas flow. These and other improvements result in stable lean combustion that enhances fuel economy by approximately 20% and reduces CO2 emissions by roughly 17% under 10-15 test mode operation compared with the previous sedan model.

New NEO QG15DE engine with LEV specification
Based on the NEO QG15DE engine, this LEV engine adopts a new catalyst system, among other improvements, to reduce carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions to approximately one-tenth of the average values specified by Japan's current exhaust emission regulations for operation under the 10-15 test mode.

New NEO QG13DE engine
This new engine has been developed as the successor to the GA13DE engine that is widely recognized for providing nimble, spirited driving performance with ample power in reserve. Power output and fuel economy have been markedly improved through extensive measures taken to reduce friction, resulting in an engine with superior practicality and economy.

NEO Di QG18DD direct-injection gasoline engine and HYPER CVT
The NEO Di direct-injection gasoline engine, which reconciles greater power output with substantially improved fuel economy, is combined with the HYPER CVT that achieves low fuel consumption and smooth, powerful driving performance. This remarkable combination provides powerful, responsive driving performance characteristic of a vehicle one class larger while improving fuel economy by approximately 60% and cutting CO2 emissions by about 40% under 10-15 test mode operation.

NEO VVL SR16VE engine
This engine incorporates the Variable Valve Lift and Timing (VVL) system that optimally controls the opening/closing timing and lift of the intake and exhaust valves according to the engine operating conditions for substantially improved torque and power in all speed ranges, resulting in sporty driving performance.

Moreover, the Sunny also comes with a new automatic transmission, the E-ATx. This new automatic transmission adopts Nissan’s new “E-Flow Torque Converter” that increases power transmission efficiency, delivering smooth speed changes and response as well as improving fuel economy.

The chassis consists of a strut suspension at the front and the Multi-Link Beam Rear Suspension. In conjunction with the adoption of the new platform, suspension parts were thoroughly re-examined and body stiffness at the suspension attachment locations has been increased to achieve enhanced handling and stability together with improved ride comfort.

4. High-level safety
With the aim of further improving safety, Nissan designs and engineers all its vehicles on the basis of the Triple Safety concept that comprises three key principles of safety. The first is "information safety" for forewarning the driver of potential danger, the second is "control safety" for assisting the driver in avoiding potential danger, and the third is "impact safety" for helping reduce injury in the event of an accident. The Sunny incorporates an extensive array of safety technologies based on this Triple Safety concept to provide high-level safety performance.
