December 11, 2000. Nissan in Mexico Reaches 3 Million Units Accumulated
Vehicles Produced Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced today that it cumulative production in for
its Mexican operations, Nissan Mexicana, has reached 3 million units. Nissan established Nissan Mexicana in 1961 and began producing the Bluebird
411 series at the Cuernavaca Plant in Mexico in 1966. Since then, the company
has produced mainly small-medium passenger vehicles and pickups. In March 1989,
Nissan Mexicana was the first of Nissan's overseas production base to exceed
1 million units in total cumulative production. In addition to Cuernavaca plant, Nissan started production of vehicles at
a second Mexican plant located in Aguascalientes in 1992. In August 1995 the
total production from both plants reached the 2 million units mark. Nissan Mexicana currently produces the new Sentra, Tsuru, Tsubame Station
Wagon and pickups. In 1999 the company consolidated all North American Sentra
production in Mexico, including all vehicles sold in the United States, Canada,
Central and South America and the Caribbean island markets. Also, beginning in December of 2000, Nissan Mexicana began production of the
Renault Scénic. The first jointly produced model under the Nissan-Renault
Alliance is made at the Cuernavaca Plant and will be joined in late 2001 by
the Renault Clio to be produced in Aguascalientes. The joint production efforts
are a part of active business developments in Mexico within the Alliance. In November 2000 the accumulated number of vehicles produced by Nissan in
the United States reached 5 million units, combined with Mexican production
brings accumulated North America production to more than 8 million units. By 2003, Nissan will be expand production capacity in Mexico to 400,000 units
annually. Combined annual production capacity for Nissan in North America, including
the already announced increased capacity for Smyrna and the new plant which
will start production in 2003 in Canton, Miss., will total 1.15 million units. # # # |
