The 33rd Tokyo Motor Show, October 13,1999 October 13, 1999
Highlights of Nissan's Exhibits at the 33rd Tokyo Motor ShowTokyo - Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. will present three concept cars at the upcoming 33rd Tokyo Motor Show, including the high-performance upscale XVL sedan, as well as an impressive array of cutting-edge automotive technologies, such as the Extroid CVT continuously variable transmission and NEO Di direct-injection engines. Besides the XVL, the other two concept cars to be unveiled are the CYPACT compact, sporty, eco-friendly coupe and the AXY lifestyle utility vehicle. Highlighting the powertrain exhibits will be the latest environmentally beneficial technologies that give concrete expression to Nissan's development concept of "combining environmental friendliness with superior driving pleasure." Notable examples include the newly developed Extroid CVT for application to rear-wheel-drive vehicles powered by large engines, the HYPER CVT for use on 1.0 to 1.3-liter class cars and the newest NEO Di direct-injection engines. A special CVT Corner will showcase Nissan's extensive CVT technologies for which the company enjoys a lead over other manufacturers and has moved quickly to adopt on production vehicles. The smooth, pleasing driveability, powerful acceleration, remarkably low fuel consumption and other salient benefits of CVTs will be explained in easy-to-understand formats using cut-away models, video presentations and panel explanations. The Nissan stand will also include a Safety Corner displaying a wide roster of advanced safety technologies based on Nissan's comprehensive Triple Safety concept. Other areas will feature various reference models, environmental technologies, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and motorsport exhibits, among other attractions, making this year's stand even more substantial and exciting.

CYPACT Overview of Major Exhibits A new-generation platform for rear-wheel-drive L-class vehicles has been adopted to provide a roomy, comfortable interior and large trunk space. This platform also contributes to improvements in essential vehicle performance in the areas of handling, stability, ride comfort and safety, and it makes possible the handsomely balanced body proportions. The exterior has been executed in a powerful yet elegant styling while the interior offers a superior-quality ambience for relaxing in exquisite comfort. The NEO Di VQ30DD direct-injection gasoline engine, Extroid CVT and other cutting-edge technologies incorporated in the XVL combine to deliver delightful driving performance with ample power in reserve. Origin of model name: X signifies the future, V denotes the V engine and L stands for luxury indicative of superb quality. Together, they express the concept of a next-generation, premium-quality sedan powered by a VQ engine.
Projecting an image of delightfully sporty driving performance, the exterior design will make an impressive styling statement anywhere. On the inside, the interior is distinguished by its simple and immaculately clean ambience. The use of a newly developed NEO Di direct-injection diesel engine accomplishes the super-fuel-efficient 3.0-liter car concept. The CYPACT incorporates a wealth of ITS technologies, especially multimedia information and communications capabilities, to propose new forms of user-car communication. Origin of model name: The name was coined by taking the "Cy" of cyber, implying high technology, and adding to it the "pact" of compact car. The resulting name cogently expresses the car's distinctive features.
A lifestyle utility vehicle for "accessing" a host of delightful experiences and peace of mind The exterior design projects a sharp, clean image exuding a friendly atmosphere while the interior is characterized by its simple design with a soothing ambience. Together with the adoption of a universal design concept for ease of use by anyone, the vehicle packaging achieves a spacious, comfortable interior in compact body dimensions. The AXY is fitted with a newly developed 2.0-liter NEO Di direct-injection gasoline engine and the HYPER CVT to deliver superb driving performance with ample power in reserve. Origin of model name: The name was created to suggest the word "access," which is the car's key development theme.
Extroid CVT This completely new type of CVT is the world's first CVT to be successfully implemented on rear-wheel-drive vehicles powered by large engines. Transmission of drive torque and ratio changes are accomplished by pairs of discs and power rollers. This unique CVT provides remarkably fast response, smooth ratio changes and powerful driving performance. Fuel economy is improved by approximately 10% over conventional automatic transmissions.
This new CVT unit now brings to 1.0 to 1.3-liter class cars the smooth, powerful driving performance that the HYPER CVT has so far achieved for 2.0-liter class vehicles. A torque converter has been adopted for improved start-off acceleration and enhanced driving ease at very low vehicle speeds, such as when taking off on slopes or parking in a garage. Full electronic control of ratio changes has also been adopted for a further improvement in fuel economy of approximately 10% over the existing N-CVT. The development of the new Extroid CVT and HYPER CVT for 1.0 to 1.3-liter class vehicles has further improved and expanded Nissan's extensive CVT lineup, which now includes units that can be paired with engines ranging in displacement from the 1.0-liter to the 3.0-liter class.
Newly developed 4.5-liter and 2.0-liter NEO Di direct-injection gasoline engines will be exhibited. The development of these two new engines has further improved the broad lineup of NEO Di direct-injection gasoline engines, which now range in displacement from 1.8-liter to 4.5-liter versions. Also on display will be a newly developed compact NEO Di direct-injection diesel turbo engine.
