This is a newly developed compact CVT which features a unique sub-transmission. ratio coverage that surpasses 7-speed automatic transmission, as well as a significant efficiency improvement. It achieves small and light packaging and high fuel economy.
This has first been installed in Juke released in June 2010.

A new mechanism that realizes gear ratio width expansion

In ordinary CVTs, the pulley had to be made larger in order to expand the ratio coverage. For small vehicles, it has been difficult to achieve this due to layout constraints. In the XTRONIC CVT, ratio coverage has been expanded while keeping the pulley size small by employing a sub-transmission (2-step gear shift).
This enables both an improvement in response upon launch and at low speeds as well as the capability to keep low engine rpm while driving at high speeds. Both features result in better fuel economy.
