Helps reduce accidents caused by pedal misapplication

pedal_2013.jpg

In Japan, around 7,000 accidents are caused annually by pedal misapplication between the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal. These accidents frequently occur in parking lots. Emergency assist for pedal misapplication* accurately detects pedestrians and helps reduce these accidents during parking maneuvers, when drivers may mistake the brake for the accelerator or press down on the accelerator too strongly, resulting in collisions with nearby vehicles, walls or pedestrians.
Technology Functionality
The system warns the driver via a visual alert and warning sound if it detects an obstacle in the direction of travel when the car is moving at low speed during parking or if it detects strong application of the accelerator. Simultaneously, the system suppresses acceleration. Further, if the system determines that there is the potential for a collision with an obstacle, it applies the brake to assist in avoiding a collision while continuing to provide the visual and audible alerts.

Technology Configuration
The system uses sonar to recognize the presence of an obstacle in the direction of travel and the distance until the vehicle reaches it. It calculates the speed of the car and the distance, and if it determines there to be potential for a collision it warns the driver and automatically controls the engine and brakes to help reduce the likelihood of a collision.

Certain models are installed with the Around View Monitor**, which can recognize the lane markers that outline the parking space. If the driver applies excessive acceleration in this kind of environment, the system helps control the sudden acceleration.

*Emergency assist for pedal misapplication is a convenience feature. It is the driver’s responsibility to stay alert, drive safely and be in control of the vehicle at all times. May not detect every object and does not warn of moving objects. May not engage depending on certain roads, weather or driving conditions. Speed and other limitations apply.
**Around View Monitor is a parking aid/convenience feature. Cannot completely eliminate blind spots. May not detect every object and does not warn of moving objects. Always check surroundings before moving vehicle. Not a substitute for proper backing procedures. Always turn to check what is behind you before backing up.
