The innovative structure combining conventional CVT belt operation with an auxiliary gearbox features world's highest transmission ratio* of 7.3:1, even broader than 7-speed automatic transmissions, aiming at achieving light-weight, compactness, and fuel efficiency.
Nissan will begin introducing it globally to improve the fuel efficiency of gasoline-powered vehicles.

A new mechanism realizes a substantially higher transmission ratio

Increasing transmission ratio in a conventional CVT requires larger pulleys, but the layout constraints of compact cars make this very difficult.
The Next-generation CVT achieves a higher transmission ratio using a sub planetary gear to switch between low and high ranges, allowing smaller pulleys to reach higher transmission ratio.
This raises responsiveness on startups and at low speeds while allowing lower engine rpm at high speeds, resulting in higher fuel efficiency.
