The new, original one-motor two-clutch full-hybrid system was developed to improve efficiency and environmental performance while also pursuing the objective of direct response. The system incorporates a high-output lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery to improve fuel economy similar to that of a compact car, even with a 3.5 liter V6 based engine. This hybrid system will be featured on the new Infiniti M35 HYBRID, which will go on sale in spring 2011.

System Overview

The parallel hybrid system connects a motor operating both propulsion and regeneration, directly with the engine and transmission using two clutches. The system also incorporates a high-power lithium-ion battery required for full-hybrid system. Alternately switching the power source between motor and engine, the system achieves high-response acceleration and fuel efficiency.

Features of one motor/two clutch parallel hybrid configuration

  • In addition to low energy loss, the system provides direct acceleration feel and response, since the system mechanically transmits engine power.
  • Able to charge/discharge efficiently by eliminating the friction by completely stopping the engine during the motor driving or regeneration, when the clutch disconnects from the engine.

Features of Li-ion battery for hybrids

  • Powerful and responsive acceleration by increasing the battery output.
  • Achieves fuel efficiency by frequent motor driving and energy regeneration, since the battery can charge/discharge high amounts of energy in a short period of time.
Motor Drive
Clutch #1 disconnected. Complete engine stop and efficient energy transmission from the battery
Engine Drive
Clutch #1 connected. Direct delivery of engine power to the transmission.
Engine Drive
Full Engine and Power Assist. Directly delivers engine and motor power for a more responsive acceleration using the high-output of the Li-ion battery.
Regeneration
Clutch #1 disconnected. Stops engine completely and efficient energy charging from the motor.

Improved Response and a Direct Feel

  • Powerful, responsive acceleration is delivered by high-speed motor control and a powerful lithium-ion battery that has exceptionally fast charge/discharge characteristics. Instead of a torque converter, the system uses clutches which allow the system to transmit engine power directly.

Simple & Lightweight

  • Nissan replaced an existing 7-speed automatic transmission’s torque converter with a motor and two clutches in a compact confi guration. Using a one-motor system to drive the wheels and regenerate electricity allows for a reduction in the number of parts and lighter weight.
