Nissan Announces Winners of 23rd Nissan Children’s Storybook and Picture Book Grand Prix
15th Nissan Joyful Storybook and Picture Book Exhibition to be held at the National Children’s Castle
TOKYO (Mar. 9, 2007) — Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced prizes for 38 categories in the 23rd Nissan Children’s Storybook and Picture Book Grand Prix, including the Grand Prizes for storybooks and picture books. The 23rd Grand Prix was sponsored by Nissan and organized by the International Institute for Children’s Literature, Osaka.
In collaboration with the National Children’s Castle (Foundation for Child Well-being), Nissan is holding the 15th Nissan Joyful Storybook and Picture Book Exhibition. The exhibition will be held at the Atrium Gallery of the National Children’s Castle in Shibuya, Tokyo from Saturday, March 24 through Thursday, April 5.

23rd Nissan Children’s Storybook and Picture Book Grand Prix The Grand Prix attracted 2,661 entries from amateur authors and illustrators between July to October 2006, comprising 2,108 children’s storybooks and 553 picture books. The storybook Grand Prize winner was entitled Hotaru no Kawa by Ms. Hitomi Otsuki of Kawasaki, Kanagawa. The picture book Grand Prize was awarded to Suika Bozu by Mr. Shinya Tomita of Chikushino, Fukuoka. The winners will receive exclusive prizes and Nissan goods.
The two Grand Prize winners will be published in December and will retail at
bookstores. Nissan will also donate copies to public and private libraries and
other institutions throughout Japan. To promote these new talents, a booklet to
introduce the eight Grand Prize and Special Prize winners and their works will
be printed by Nissan to be distributed at Nissan Galleries and other locations
throughout Japan. An awards ceremony will be held at the International Institute
for Children’s Literature in Suita, Osaka on Sunday, March 11.
* The Nissan Children’s Storybook and Picture Book Grand Prix commemorates the May 1984 opening of the International Institute for Children’s Literature, Osaka—Japan’s first comprehensive center for international children’s literature. Through the publication of the Grand Prize winners, the contest aims to provide children with inspiring and imaginative storybooks and picture books. The publications are donated through Nissan offices to approximately 3,600 libraries and 620 kindergartens and nursery schools across Japan. More than 135,000 books have now been donated since the Grand Prix began.
23rd Grand Prix winners announced: Hotaru no Kawa for storybooks and Suika Bozu for picture books Hotaru no Kawa, the winning Grand Prize Storybook tells the story of Shingo, who has a fight with his best friend Naoki before his encounter “winter fireflies”. Grand Prize Picture Book Suika Bozu is a dynamic story about the adventures of a watermelon.
Three other storybooks and three picture books were awarded Special Prizes, and twenty storybooks and ten picture books received Excellence Prizes. The complete list of winning titles and authors are as follows.

15th Nissan Joyful Storybook and Picture Book Exhibition The 15th Nissan Joyful Storybook and Picture Book Exhibition will feature an exhibit of panels based on Haru to Kaminari by Minako Chiba, the Grand Prize Picture Book at last year’s 22nd Grand Prix. The exhibition will also include workshops aimed at cultivating creativity and creative minds, where children are encouraged to create their own works of art. The exhibition will also feature artwork created from discarded vehicle interior fabric and other materials. There will be a chidren’s reading corner and an information booth about Nissan’s corporate citizenship initiatives.
* The Nissan Joyful Storybook and Picture Book Exhibition has been jointly organized and hosted by Nissan and the National Children’s Castle (Foundation for Child Well-being) since 1992. It is part of Nissan’s continuing support for education—a priority in its corporate citizenship activities. The event, now in its 15th year, aims to provide a place where children can exercise their imagination by experiencing picture books and storybooks.
