Tokyo -- Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced the domestic launch of the fully redesigned Skyline Coupe.  Models equipped with an automatic transmission were put on the market across the country today, while models fitted with a manual transmission will be released on February 6.  In addition, the Skyline Sedan has undergone a minor model change and will be launched nationwide on January 27.

The new Skyline Coupe has been designed and engineered around the product concept of "stylish design and performance," representing the two attributes that were given precedence over all other aspects in the development of this premium sports coupe.

The car was launched earlier in North America last November as the Infiniti G35 Sport Coupe, which has been enthusiastically received with high accolades.  The Infiniti G35 Sport Coupe and the Infiniti G35 Sport Sedan were selected by Motor Trend magazine as the "2003 Car of the Year," one of the most prestigious auto awards given in North America.

The major distinguishing features of the new Skyline Coupe include:
Dynamic and emotional design
The Coupe design is a sportier expression of the unique design identity of the V35 Skyline model.
High driving performance for reliableness and exhilaration
A wide track and a long wheelbase bring out the car's exhilarating driving performance with ample power in reserve.

Sales target of the Skyline Coupe:
16,500 units/year (North America and Japan)

Dealers selling the Skyline Coupe:
Satio, Prince and Cherry channel dealers of the Nissan Red Stage (including Nissan Red & Blue Stage dealers that handle all models)

Sales launch events:

Skyline Coupe Overview
1. Design
While maintaining a unified styling identity with the Sedan, the Coupe design embodies the four key themes of "dynamic, emotional, distinctive and advanced" to endow the car with the beautiful and powerful appearance of a premium sports coupe.

 Exterior
The car's dynamic and emotional design is based on low and wide body proportions, a long wheelbase for a look of solid stability and large-diameter tires that make a salient styling statement.

 Interior
The comfortable, personalized cabin is appointed with exclusive Coupe sport seats that provide excellent body-holding support, equipment accented with a titanium-looking finish and various other features, all of which combine to give the Coupe interior a distinctly sporty ambience.

2. Mechanisms
All models are fitted with the high-power NEO VQ35DE engine that produces 206 kW (280 PS) of horsepower and 363 N-m (37.0 kg-m) of torque for impressive driving performance with ample power in reserve and a flat, powerful torque characteristic in all speed ranges.  Additionally, the Coupe adopts a long wheelbase with a central occupant seating position, a wide track and large-diameter tires to provide smooth, agile handling characteristics for an eminently confident and enjoyable driving experience.  These and other features maximize the outstanding properties of the FM (Front, Midship) Package to deliver superb driving performance.

3. Safety and Environmental Friendliness
Included among the many standard safety features are Xenon headlamps, Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), SRS side airbags for the driver and front passenger, SRS curtain airbag systems and front-seat Active Head Restraints.

Environmental friendliness has also been aggressively pursued, with all models qualifying for ultra-low emission vehicle (U-LEV)* certification under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's low-emission vehicle certification system.

*The low-emission vehicle certification system of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport was inaugurated in April 2000 to encourage the penetration of low-emission vehicles through their selection by ordinary consumers.  Vehicles certified as U-LEVs reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions by an additionally 75% from the levels required by Japan's 2000 exhaust emission regulations.

Skyline Sedan Undergoes Minor Model Change

Among the refinements made to the Skyline Sedan this time, the 2WD models now have higher spring rates, shock absorbers with approximately 30% greater damping force and larger-diameter stabilizer bars for better control of body motions, compared with the previous models, and thereby deliver a tauter driving feel.  In addition, braking performance has been enhanced by adopting a braking system incorporating high-performance sport brake pads with an increased friction coefficient and highly rigid brake rotors with an outstanding heat radiation characteristic.

The exterior design projects a sharper impression than before as a result of applying a smoky chrome finish to the grille and headlamp inner panels and changing the sill color from gray to black.  At the rear, the car badge and Skyline emblem have been repositioned to give the rear-end a wider look.

On the inside, the audio and heater control switches have been embellished with a chrome accent for a higher quality image, and the 250GT and 250GT FOUR models are provided with rear-seat air-conditioner vents for enhanced occupant comfort.

The grade selection has also been reorganized as part of this minor model change.

Overview of Skyline Coupe Driving Helper with Autech Driving Control Package
Type e
The Skyline Coupe Driving Helper is fitted with the newly developed Autech Driving Control Package Type e, a set of hand-activated controls for operating the accelerator and brakes and providing substantially improved functionality over the previous package.  The Autech Driving Control Package Type e incorporates the first electronic control system ever adopted by a Japanese manufacturer for the control lever used to operate the accelerator.  This has resulted in a more compact device with improved operational smoothness. Standard components of this package include a control lever for operating the accelerator and brakes with the left hand and a steering wheel knob for steering with the right hand.  The major features of the package are outlined below.

 Operating ease and comfort
In addition to the reduced effort for operating the accelerator and improved smoothness of operation, it is now possible to manipulate the accelerator with the left hand placed on the palm rest.  This feature improves upper body stability and significantly reduces the load on the arm during long hours of driving.  Compared with the previous Autech Driving Control Package, the control lever unit itself has been reduced in size by about half to minimize the effect on the driver's leg space.

 Reliability and safety
Besides constructing the braking mechanism with a double wire system, care has also been taken, for example, to reduce the time lag in braking operations.  This was accomplished by revising the structure of the control lever unit itself, as a result of adopting the new accelerator control system described above.

 Design
The control lever consists of a combination of genuine leather and aluminum, featuring a black and silver color motif, and the steering wheel knob is wrapped in genuine leather.  The result is a sporty, novel design.
