Responding rapidly to shifts in society and effectively reducing the environmental burden
The environmental challenges confronting automobile manufacturers have become more diverse, changing with the times. The specific issues that need to be considered also differ by country and region. At Nissan, we maintain a sensitive awareness of the changes that are occurring almost daily in countries around the world and strive to act appropriately and rapidly.
For that, we need to communicate and cooperate actively with society. To effectively promote real-world reductions in environmental impact, Nissan has formed various partnerships with citizen groups, government agencies, and other industries.
Working with society to promote CO2 reductions
Fuel efficiency differs significantly depending on how an automobile is operated. To raise fuel efficiency (and reduce CO2 emissions) in real-world driving, Nissan is cooperating with members of society in various ways to ease traffic congestion and promote eco-driving.
- Nissan's Carwings information service for navigation systems can search the fastest routes based on highly accurate traffic predictions. It also provides such services as supporting eco-driving. (Currently available only in Japan)
-

In Kanagawa Prefecture, where many of Nissan's operations are located, we are promoting a project aimed at reducing traffic accidents and easing traffic congestion with the use of the intelligent transport system (ITS).* This project is also ascertaining how CO2 emissions can be reduced and energy more efficiently used by easing traffic congestion.
- In China, we are promoting the Star Wings project, developed in cooperation with the Beijing Transportation Information Center to ease traffic congestion.<,/li>
- * ITS: A system to solve road traffic problems, such as traffic accidents and congestion, by providing information about “humans, roads, and vehicles” through networks of advanced information and communications devices.
In the ways described above, Nissan is contributing to the development of social infrastructure that will lead to reductions in CO2 emissions.
Communicating with society
To make Nissan's environmental efforts more widely known, we are carrying out various environmental communication activities on both global and local levels. And we are not simply trying to make our activities known but are launching new undertakings and promoting cooperation through communication activities with a wide range of stakeholders.
- We prepare and provide a wide range of environmental communication tools, such as our Sustainability Report* and the environmental information for each model carried in our product literature for customers.
- Environmental Advisory Meetings attended by Nissan management and outside experts have been held annually since 2005.
- We are active in holding exhibitions and test drive events for fuel cell vehicles-looked upon as the ultimate eco-cars-and low emission vehicles.
- We conduct tours of our environmental facilities at each plant for local government officials and have established an Environmental Facilities Tour at our Oppama Plant.
- We cooperate in integrated study programs at elementary schools and send employees to schools to talk about our environmental efforts.
- * Sustainability Report: A report centered on the philosophy and thinking behind Nissan's economic, environmental, and social activities that form the three pillars of Nissan's approach to social responsibility.
The information and experience we gain through these communication activities with members of society serve to motivate us to further advance Nissan's environmental activities.
