Nissan's Goals for the Resource Cycle

Demand for natural resources such as metals and oil is skyrocketing in response to the rapid economic growth of emerging countries. In addition to promoting reduced use of virgin natural resources through resource-saving and resource-recycling measures, it is becoming important to procure natural resources that have a lower impact on the Earth's ecosystems, not only from the standpoint that these resources are limited, but also considering the wide-ranging effects that resource extraction has on ecosystems.

Nissan has targeted 100% resource recovery for end-of-life vehicles (ELVs), while also promoting design centered on the vehicle life cycle, waste reduction, and other such resource-saving measures.

In addition to continuing these activities, Nissan, adopting the closed-loop recycling scheme*, will promote expanded use of recycled materials to reduce ecosystem degradation and reliance on virgin natural resources, doing our utmost to contribute to the development of a sustainable society.

  • *A system in which the company collects its end-of-life products, recycles them into materials for parts, and reuse them in new products.

Achievement of a 95% legally-mandated recovery rate 9 years in advance

In Japan, the Automobile Recycling Law mandates a 95% recovery rate for end-of-life vehicles by 2015. We achieved this rate in 2006, nine years earlier than legally required. Our next step is to expand these activities globally and achieve a 95% recovery rate for Nissan vehicles operating around the world. As part of our efforts to achieve this goal, we are working with our Alliance partner, Renault, to create a European network for used vehicle recovery.
