Nissan's New Design Center Unveiling Event Report (March 15, 2007)

The design center in Atsugi-shi, Kanagawa was renovated for the first time in this 25 years and unveiled to domestic and foreign media for 4 days, on December 12-15, 2006. This new design center was the climax of our facility renovation activities started in 2002. It has about 42,000 square meter, which is 1.5 times larger than the previous design center and more than 600 people are working there. Today we will report the unveiling event to you.

About a total of 270 journalists from 90 media came to our new design center in 4 days

President Ghosn's Opening Speech

On the 12th, the first day of the events, Mr. Ghosn made an opening speech. At the opening of his speech, he commented "Great product drives our success. And great product at Nissan is focused on performance, innovation and design. This new facility is an important element of Nissanís long-term strategy to boost the efficiency and effectiveness of our R&D activities. "
As well as this new design studio, the Dualis scheduled to be launched in 2007 in Japanese market and newly designed car badge of new GT-R scheduled to be launched in 2007 were unveiled by Mr. Ghosn for the first time.

Presentation about the new design center

After Mr. Ghosn's presentation, Mr. Shiro NAKAMURA, Senior Vice President in charge of design, made a presentation about the details of new design center.
At the top of his speech, he said "we have done various activities under the slogan of "Establish power brand through world leading design". These investments are very essential to accelerate the speed of our activities further and lead us to "Super Evolution" toward the future. At the same time they mean a declaration of our strong intention that we will lead the car design world. "

Facility Tour

After the Mr. Nakamura's presentation, all guests joined the facility tour of new design center for 1 hour. The tour started at the reception hall and then they looked at designer's studio where designers are actually drawing sketches. After that, they watched clay modeling demonstration in the modeling studio where clay modelers are developing models with designers with various scaled models. Then, they looked at several displays on our various activities besides Exterior and Interior design, such as color design, parts design and Perceived Quality. Moreover, they visited the places we set up to support designers in generating ideas such as Information Gallery filled with many design-oriented items on display and Information Kitchen where many design-related and updated information magazines are available.

Party in the hall where the latest show cars are on display

When the tour was finished, the media people were welcomed back in the big hall with Nissan's proud latest models such as GT-R prototype model, INFINITI coupe concept, ALTIMA coupe concept, and DUALIS, a brand new cross over SUV unveiled during this event. Moreover, in the outside viewing yard, the models sold in overseas markets that we can hardly see in Japan were displayed to add some glitz and glamour to the scene. A get-together was held for the media with these models, the responsible officials and the chief designers of whom Nissan Design can be proud.

Three major Characteristics of new design center

Establishing new work style

This new Design Center was created based on 3 major concepts. One of them is "to establish a new work style." To embody the concept, we set up a keyword as "Collaboration & Communication." This combination of words was defined not for mere the enhancement of collaboration among sections in Design Center but for the enhancement of comprehensive collaboration among all members involved in Design Development from Product Planning group, Vehicle Engineering group to Suppliers. This notion already appeared in the layout of the new buildings itself. This three story building is elongated on east-west axis as the key feature of Design Center and the zoning classification was applied to the building by project. Design studios and modeling studios exist on the 1st and the 2nd floors and designers and modelers can exchange visit easily. The 3rd floor was designated for collaboration with concerned parties. Our New Design Center will facilitate collaborative work more efficiently and effectively with less travel distance.

Establishing a creative environment

The second concept is to establish a creative environment. To generate an attractive design, how we let designers demonstrate their creative abilities to the fullest is the key.
Therefore, in our new Design Center, to stimulate designers' creative minds, we tried various measures. For instance, on the 2nd floor, we set up Information Gallery and Information Booth where we display design oriented items under different themes besides automobile design. Also, we tried not to build walls as much as possible in the studio in order to keep it in an open and flexible manner. It led to the establishment of a creative environment to produce much better products by letting designers go beyond the border of projects and stimulate each other.

Promoting digital process

Finally, it is about "Digital Development Process promotion."
Currently at Nissan, Digital process has been promoted in a positive manner across the board.
In Design, for instance, Sketching used to be something done by hands, using papers and markers. Now, it is a computer-assisted process. Now, most works in Sketching are handled in computer. A screen called "PowerWall," enabled us to verify design virtually in various ways without making any physical model and made it possible for us to study design in an extremely short period of time. One of the merits we can expect from the digital process is to reduce the quantity of models we make. That leads to lessen a burden on our environment besides cost reduction. As another major advantage, it enables us to cut down the required time for product development and to improve our design quality. By promoting Digital Development Process, the collaboration with Vehicle Engineering group has been enhanced; it surely reduces redundancy of work and it will enable us to develop a vehicle in shorter period of time more than ever while maintaining high quality.

Nissan Design set up a goal of creating "world leading design." We aim to be the world benchmark not for mere vehicle design but also for work style and continue challenging by ourselves and for ourselves. "Passion & Imagination" is another keyword.
