NISSAN DESIGN Offsite Internship Short Term Program Report
Short-term Intensive Car Design Program

Long and short. There are two different type programs in "NISSAN DESIGN Offsite Internship." This time, we feature the first short-term program held in this August. While making a review of the short-term, we will introduce you the characteristics that are different from the long-term.

Long-term for "Thorough Experience" and Short-term for "Intensive Experience."

What is "Short-term Program"?

Long-term for "Thorough Experience" and Short-term for "Intensive Experience."

If we say our long term program is for thorough experience in car designing, the short-term will be for intensive experience. Unlike the long-term program that you learn designing thoroughly while in school, you need to use your long school breaks to join in the short-term program which requires 8 hours of study per day for about 2 weeks. In this, our first short-term program, 10 interns participated. The assignment, "to propose a design of a new vehicle for future," having been given, they literally worked on it "intensively." You might think that 8-hour study in one day is too much and long. However, participants considered it too short.

A message to young aspiring car designers "throughout Japan"

Our short-term program is designed for the students throughout Japan who have an intention of participating in our programs but have a difficulty in commuting to our design studio in Nakameguro while going to schools. Thus, this program is to be carried out during school vacation and to provide participants with necessary traveling cost and accommodation. For this time, the first Short-term program, we received a great number of applications from all over Japan and many of them are from those students who live outside the Kanto region. Moreover, 8 out of 10 interns who actually joined in this program were from non Kanto regions and walked to our Nakameguro design studio every day from the accommodation easily access on foot. Even in such unfamiliar surrounding, all participants worked hard on car design.

The long and short of its, it is a concentrated program of Long-term.

Although the term is short, the contents of this program are all the same as our long-term program except that Modeling experience is excluded. Although it is short, the contents of our full-fledged long program are squeezed to make it possible to learn it within a short term. Along with the actual work flow of car designing, the program is comprised of concept making, idea sketch development, presentation panel creation and the final presentation to proceed every day. In addition, at each milestone, designers join in the program and hold study meetings. Although this program is tight, all interns tackled with assignments with passion, and at the final presentation, a variety of unique and attractive designs were proposed.

Upon the completion of the first short-term program

Our short-term is literally a short program. This time, it lasted only 11 days from August 21st to 31st(9 actual school days since there was no lesson on weekend). The program orientation is scheduled on the first day, Sketch training follows next on the 2nd day to make a smooth start. As the program is implemented steadily, in the second week, the participants accelerated their pace to complete their assignments for the final presentation. On the last day, until the last minutes before the presentation, all interns continued their work and they finally completed their design. At the final presentation, 5 minutes was given to each in order to make a presentation. All participants put their all energy, that could be equal to the amount of their efforts they made during the 2 week program, in this given short time and this led to the great output. Their passion in their presentation induced a special atomosphere and the first short-term program ended in the air filled with excitement.

NISSAN DESIGN Offsite Internship
The NISSAN DESIGN Offsite Internship program is meant to nurture a new generation of designers who inherit the excellence in spirit and craftsmanship of Japanís creative DNA. We set up a special studio in Nakameguro for the program, with fixtures and fittings similar to our actual design studio. In this creative environment, we provide practical opportunities for students eager to explore the world of professional car design, including the chance to interact with instructors who are professional car designers at Nissan.
