NISSAN DESIGN Offsite Internship Long Term Program, Interview with one of the instructors
A message from an instructor---
"Tell all people the joy of creation with the spirit of MONODUKURI"

This time, we features Mr. Toshiyuki Abe, who was assigned to serve as an instructor of this first long-term program. He spent about 2 months with the students who participated in this program and witnessed their growth. Mr. Abe himself is a professional designer in the concept car design group of Nissan Motor Com. Here we asked him what you can learn from this internship program and its merits from a professional viewpoint.

Profile
Toshiyuki Abe, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. Product Design Department.

Since he joined the company in 1991, he has been in charge of Exterior Design for production vehicles. Up to now, he has worked on Sunny, TEANA, Altima (sold in North America) and so on. In June of this year, he was assigned to the current group and now is in charge of concept cars. For this internship, he takes charge of Sketch Technique lesson.

Witnessing how professionals work is the greatest merit for participants.
All work and all fun-loving atmosphere makes a good designer; the students learned thoroughly.
Each and every sensibility counts. The purpose of this program is to unleash the students' talents by motivating them.
My hat's off to their energy and their growth.
A wish for you all---"Share your experience with other students as many as possible and expand your possibility!

Witnessing how professionals work is the greatest merit for participants.

"Being next to a professional designer, you can see how he/she works and work together with him/her." That is the primary feature and the biggest merit of this Off-site Internship, isn't it? For us, professional designers, having an opportunity to observe what other designers are doing is a great experience and we can learn a lot from it. Because once you join a company, you will not have enough time to take a very hard look at how others handle their works. Moreover, by setting a place outside of the company exclusively for this internship, in an open atmosphere, instructors can devote themselves to advise the participants on their works.
If this program had been carried out inside a company like other internship programs, things would have been different and would have not worked in the way we had. Any design-related section always has to do with high confidentiality, so that it is greatly difficult to show what is going on in the real studio to outsiders. Besides this, all designers are full of their own affairs and do not have time to advise others. In this program, a variety of Nissan designers gather at one place designated only for students. Students can concentrate on developing their own capability. It's a great learning environment.

All work and all fun-loving atmosphere makes a good designer; the students learned thoroughly.

What you can experience through this program is concept generation, sketching, modeling and so on. By letting them experience the production phases to finish a car by themselves, we try to make them understand it. We, instructors provide them with a variety of knowledge not from the standpoint of a "teaching" person but from a person who works together. During this 1st Long-term program was, for instance, the students were gathering at my desk, sometimes chatting, sometimes observing how I design and making questions. Also, on the way back home, we sometimes found that we were in the same train and naturally started talking each other. I think I managed to tell them the reality of working or professional attitude in such conversation. The students truly want to obtain such information. At a glance, they might look as if they were only having fun. But, they really knew what they should learn from this and they did.

Each and every sensibility counts. The purpose of this program is to unleash the students' talents by motivating them.

Through this program, what I want to tell the students is "excitement / sensation" of creation. This is the feeling I've always kept since when I became a professional. Especially, when my proposal is selected and goes under development to finish with my team members, I feel happy and honored. I am hoping that they will experience the same sensation I have. For that, in this program, I was trying to give greatest consideration to motivate them as much as possible. For example, not denying their possibility or their sensibility is one thing I exercised. This is from my own experience. When you have something you want to do, you should do it with your all strength. Then, you will come up with the best you could do. So, first, I try to understand the intention of each student, give appropriate advice and nurture their ability and advantage.

My hat's off to their energy and their growth.

When the 1st Long-term program was ended, I was truly surprised by their development. At the beginning, for instance, their explanation at the presentation of concept was weak and they could not draw a line well even for sketches. Actually, I sometimes wondered if they can make it or not. However, as we proceeded the program, everyone developed his / her skills at surprising speed. At the closing ceremony, they made a great presentation with confidence in front of the eminent members even I myself get nervous about talking. Among those who finished the program, there are some whom I want to work together immediately. There are some others whom I can expect their future growth. I uttered, "if this person continuously develops his (or her) skills, he (or she) will be a great designer..." in my mind. Beside, more than anything else, their energy to reach their dreams by making efforts was really amazing and I got admiration for that.

A wish for you all---"Share your experience with other students as many as possible and expand your possibility!"

This Nissan internship program is the one we started with the intention, "for our future, we want to pass down the DNA of MONODUKURI." Therefore, for the participants of #1 program, I want them to tell people what they learned here when they go back to their schools. By sharing what they absorbed, all such students will develop their skills and grow together...That is my wish. Of course, if each and every student become a great designer and surprised us in the future, nothing else will be better than this.
