A goal to spread the fun of children's literature to a wider audience of readers
Q:

How did you get involved with the Nissan Children's Storybook and Picture Book Grand Prix?

A:

As soon as I began working at the institute last spring, I became involved in organizing the Grand Prix. I majored in children's literature in college and have tried writing at one time. The Grand Prix has been my dream and something I held strongly as a goal. My role has since changed, however, I consider myself extremely lucky to be involved with the operation of the Grand Prix and to closely support all of the aspiring writers.

Q:

What is the meaning and purpose behind holding this Grand Prix?

A:

First, I believe it is good that a wide range of individuals from the general public can apply. Winning offers you the opportunity to make your professional debut as a writer. Hence, while it offers a direction and a goal for aspiring writers, the event also serves to continually fuel their imaginative spirit.

As the organizer, one of our purposes for the event is to disseminate great works of literature to the world. We are also actively trying to cultivate new talents by conducting varies activitiesincluding the seminar for the Grand Prix winners before the awards ceremony.

I believe that the Grand Prix has a role in raising the public's awareness on children's books and picture books. There are people who come to visit the institute because of the Grand Prix.

Q:

What was your impression after actually viewing the entries yourself?

A:

With the picture books, I was impressed by the individuality and power that each picture possess. For the children's storybook category, I was interested by the variety of themes and uniqueness from each writer's perspective, ranging from social issues such as bullying to fun stories that excite the readers. This is my personal impression, and I was envious of how wonderful each participant was, since they are able to express their own world through their work.

Q:

What was your impression of the winner selection process?

A:

The selection process was conducted in a very warm and relaxed atmosphere. However, the judges were absolutely serious in the process. During the selection, a large number of books were lined up for screening, and the judges view each work very carefully. The process reminded me of the collective effort necessary from the authors as well as a wide range of people in order for a book to be released. The author's names were not revealed at the screening, but the judges can apparently recognize the works of authors that participate each time. I felt the importance of the long-standing Grand Prix, held for the 23rd time, when the judges say, "Wow, this author must have made a great effort this year again!"

Q:

What kind of presence does Nissan have as a sponsor?

A:

In addition to their smooth operation, we have received advice on certain measures to promote the Grand Prix to a larger audience. They are incredibly reliable. I feel that they are a very assuring partner, as they always work together with us.

Q:

What do importance do you place on at the Grand Prix?

A:

This is a great award that has a 23-year history. I wish to ensure that the comfortable environment is maintained in the future, where we can warmly watch over those who are trying to grow as authors.

The Grand Prize winners will be published and the books will be donated to libraries across the country. The winning work has a big advantage of being read by a many readers. Children's storybooks and picture books are not only for children. It is a form of literature that allows a wide range of ages, children and adults alike, to share a moving experience with one another, and within each story lies hidden something important that makes it possible for hearts to meet. I hope to work to share the splendor of children's literature with a wide audience.
