Hiroyuki SAITO
(Technology Development Division, Vehicle Test Department Interior and Engine Cooling & HVAC System Test Group, Leader)

Job at Nissan

I work in the vehicle testing department where I am in responsible for performing tests on new car models in areas like user-friendliness, comfort, and ease-of-driving.

What made you start yachting?

My grandfather was a sailing instructor, so as a kid I grew up hearing about the magnificence of the sea and boats. When I joined the company, I had the preconceived notion that yachting was an amusement for the wealthy and that it was something difficult to get into. But when I found out that the company had a yacht club, I decided to join.

How did you come to volunteer at the Sailing Event and your thoughts on volunteer activities?

I heard about it because it is held at the Sajima Marina, which is the main practice site for the Yacht Club.
I had absolutely no experience in assisting blind persons, so at first I was a little uneasy about whether I would be able to safely assist the children in experiencing yachting. But I decided to relax and let the children have fun, thinking, “maybe my hobby will be beneficial to the children.”
In actually participating, I was deeply moved by the sight of the children broadening their own worlds as they experienced the wind and sea with their skin and ears. And with this I realized that my concerns had been groundless.

This experience taught me that it is important for children and people in general to be cheerful and positive even when they are faced with difficult circumstances.
